We know that there are many water bodies like rivers, lakes, lagoons, etc are there in India. Some of these lakes and lagoons are so stunning that it is always crowded by the tourists. Most of the lakes in India are naturally formed and some of them are artificial or manmade.

Hussain Sagar is one of the most beautiful manmade lakes in our country which is located in Hyderabad. This beautiful lake was constructed in the year 1562 during the period of the ruler Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah of Qutb Shah Dynasty. This lake was designed by Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali and thus the lake was named as Hussaign Sagar in memory of him. The lake is built in such a way that it covers an area of 5.7 km2 and the water for filling the lake is obtained from the Musi River. There is an island which is located at the centre of the lake which has a unique statue of Lord Buddha which is carved out of a single rock. This lake has got a historical importance which we are about to see.

This is a perennial lake which is always filled by water carried by canals from the river Musi. Earlier the water from Hussain Sagar was used by the people of Hyderabad for their daily use but now this function has been taken over by the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. The Tank Bund road is one of the major attractions which can be seen near the Hussain Sagar lake. The road was widened in the year 1988 and made beautiful by placing a water fountain which is further decorated by the coloured lights. As said earlier the Buddha statue forms a unique identity for the island in the Hussain Sagar Lake. It is having a height of around 18 metres which is placed on the top of an elevated structure. The Buddha Poornima project (1985) was the driving force for the erection of such a huge statue in the Island. This statue weighs around 450 tonnes which was carved out from white granite rock. You could see that the lumbini park is situated close to the hussain sagar lake and most of the people use this park for getting a relief from the city life.

To the south of Hussain Sagar Lake you could find the Birla Mandir which is a famous Hindu temple. This temple is constructed using white marble which forms an exquisite view for your eyes. The construction of this Hindu temple was completed in the year 1976 and Swamy Raganathananndha who was an active participant of the Ramakrishna Mission opened the temple.

Next is the Prasad’s IMAX which is located near the Hussain Sagar. This multiplex theatre has five screens and provides facilities like washrooms, cafeterias, shopping mall and a gaming zone. Sanjeevaiah Park, NTR gardens, Tomb OF Saidani Maa Saheba are some other important places which are situated near to the Hussain Sagar Lake.

The condition of the lake is not so good now because of the dumping of sewages from Secunderabad and Hyderabad which had deteriorated the beauty of this lake. Heavy siltation and the accumulation of debris have reduced the depth of this lake and also polluted the water.
