Government Museum and Art Gallery opened in the date May 6th, 1968. The architect was Le Corbusier. He built this gallery and museum as extension of philosophy already established. It was this place where he conceived idea of an institution that will be expanding and growing always.

1st Museum by him in India was “Sankar Kendra” in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The gallery and museum was build for providing harmony architecturally in interior by usage of colours and structures along with flowing space to each other thereby allowing deep and long views that is uninterrupted.

The Government Museum and Art Gallery came into existence when country was partitioned that is in 1947, August. This is one of institution premier of India combined with rich, good collection of Pahari, Rajasthani paintings of miniature and sculptures of Gandharan. The Museum and Gallery was inaugurated on May 6th, 1968. It was undertaken by active support and initiative of Late Dr. M.S. Randhava who was well- known patron and connoisseur of art and Chandigarh’s Chief Commissioner.

The Museum has exhibitions of Art objects old and contemporary. There are libraries for reference. There are 10,000 books. 35 readers can sit in the library. Rare books, manuscript, journals and magazines are present. Books of Sikh culture and history are present. Facilities of photo stating are present in library.

Laboratory of conservation:

Museum takes good care, restores and preserves art materials of museum. Photo section: Paintings are hung in galleries. There are black and white paintings and colourful paintings made by renowned painters. The artists hang the work of art in exhibition hall.

To reach this place, Sector 10 C, from Bus Stand in Sector-17, one takes a local bus numbered 1, 10, 149, 75, 123, 31 or cycle rickshaw. From railway station, pre-paid auto rickshaw stand brings you right to the place. From airport, taxis and auto-rickshaws are hired directly from booths that are pre-paid. This place is 2 and half km from bus stand, 9km from railway station and 12km from airport.
